It was not too long ago that McDonald’s offered their small coffee for free! And they are doing it again! McDonald’s (in Toronto and area) is offering their small coffee for free from Feb 28 to Mar 06. I believe that this is McDonald’s strategy to counter the “rollup the rim” contest that is currently running with Tim Hortons.
Remember, this offer only applies to small coffee, so if you ask for anything other than small, you will need to pay for the differences, which is usually very small anyway. So enjoy a free cup of coffee before it’s too late!

Over the years, many people have asked me: “What is your favourite anime/cartoon series?” Every time, my response is the same: “My favourite anime is Doraemon”!!

5 main characters in Doraemon
Doraemon is a robot cat (some say gadget cat) from the 22nd century. In the 22nd century, robot cats are produced as servants, they are used as babysitters, cleaners and to perform other activities of a house mate. However, these cats are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies therefore can perform many duties human simply can’t. Doraemon is being sent back in time to take care of a kid named Nobita Nobi. This kid is not very bright, he doesn’t have good scores at school, lacks athletic abilities and is often being laughed at by his friends. Nobita’s descendants think that by sending a robot cat back in time to help out Nobita, this may change the fate of Nobita thus his descendants as well.
Doraemon is over 40 years old (the first Doraemon series was released in 1969) but the stories of Nobita and the technology that Doraemon utilizes continue to bring laughter and happiness to kids, young adults and even adults today. I have been watching Doraemon for my whole life and I still like to watch it and will not stop any time soon. Many of the high tech gadgets that Doraemon uses is stored in a pocket that is placed on his stomach. This pocket leads to a fourth dimensional storage place and Doraemon can literally fit almost anything into the pocket. Doraemon has thousands of gadgets but I will only list a few often used gadgets here:
1. “Take-koputa” (Bamboo Copter) – this is a personal flying device that uses 22nd century aerodynamic technology that can lift a person in the air. This device is small, light and can be attached to any part of the body, but usually the head for ease of mobility.
2. Time Machine – Doraemon uses a time machine to travel back in time. Nobita and his friends have used the time machine to travel to different time periods. This machine is parked right in the drawer of Nobita’s desk (again, the drawer leads to another dimension of the world). The machine can travel to any location and time periods. However, this machine is often known to mechanical failures.
3. “Dokodemo Door” – this is a door that can cut through time space and can bring the subject to any where in the world. Let say you are in Tokyo, you just have to call out a destination to the door, perhaps, New York, then when you open the door, it will bring you right into New York.
4. The “Big” and “Small” light – in Doraemon’s pocket, there are two flashlights, one is the big light, one is the small light. The big light will enlarge an object that crosses the light path of the flashlight while the small light to decrease the size of an object. (For example, Nobita will use the small light to decrease his own body size so he can get into toy cars)
5. “Time Furoshiki” – this is a time cloth that can make an object to go forward in time or backward in time, depending on which side the cloth is used when wrapping an object. For example, in one episode, Nobita found a dinosaur fossil egg. So Nobita wrap the egg in the time cloth (the side which makes the object go back in time), the egg returned to it’s original condition and hatches into a dinosaur and became Nobita’s friend.
There are simply too many gadgets and each episode Doraemon will use his gadgets to help solve problems of Nobita. I have attached some photos of Doraemon’s gadgets below:

It is that time of the year again. Many Canadians like to contribute RRSPs at the last minute and March 1, 2011 is the magic date to have your RRSP contributions count towards your 2010 taxation year.
Any amount that you contribution can be used as a deduction on your 2010 T1 Personal Tax Return. For example, when you make a RRSP contribution of $10,000, you can apply that deduction in 2010 and your taxable income amount will be reduced by $10,000. Let’s pretend that you are at a 40% marginal tax rate, contribution of $10,000 will generate approximately $4,000 of refund. Many Canadians misinterpret this as “why would I spend $10,000 to get only $4,000?” This perception is very inaccurate because you did not lose your original investment at all, in fact, by making the contribution, you will end up $4,000 richer!
Of course, this sounds too amazing to be true. When you withdraw your RRSP out, you will be taxed at your marginal rate when you withdraw your money. Following the above example, if you make your contribution at your marginal rate of 40% and withdraw the money when your income is lower (e.g. retirement) using a hypothetical marginal rate of 20%, you will make 20% return alone just by making the contribution at high personal tax rate and withdrawing it when your tax rate is lower. In addition, all the income that you will earn in your RRSP will be compounded tax free!
For many reasons, you can choose to defer your deduction. For example, if you make your contribution in 2010, you can defer the deduction of the RRSP into future years. Your money will continue to compound tax free in your RRSP account. This strategy can be beneficial when you have extra income to invest and you know that your tax rate will increase dramatically in coming years. If you will be moving from a 30% tax bracket to 40% next year, by deferring your contribution by one year, you will immediately gain an extra 10% from doing so, which is a very attractive return!
Time is almost up! If you haven’t done so already, I strongly recommend that you contact your financial advisor and determine whether a RRSP is right for you.

Over the weekend, my girlfriend and I watched a movie starred by Natalie Portman, Black Swan. I must say, I haven’t watch a psychological thriller film for a while and this movie dramatically exceeded my expectation.
In general, this movie is about a ballerina named Nina (Natalie Portman) got the opportunity to perform in the “Swan Lake” as both the White Swan and the Black Swan. Nina exhibit most traits for the White Swan, which is innocent, weak and fragile. However, a rival of hers, Lily, who just arrived at the ballet company, is showing some promising traits that match the Black Swan. This movie shows the process of Nina turning “bad” and start to lose herself in her struggle to fulfill the requirements of the White Swan and the Black Swan. As she perfect her role as a Black Swan, her psychotic symptoms such as hallucination, continue to worsen.
In the end, we see Nina perfecting her role as the Swan Queen (as both the White Swan and Black Swan), but that came with a huge sacrifice. I am not going to say much more and I strong encourage that you watch this movie. I really like it and so will you.
See below for a trailer and some photos from the movie:
